Jen’s Weekend Drafts: Self-Fluency.

By: Jen Shoop

+BECOMING FLUENT IN ONESELF: I love the wordplay in this poem — the thought of being “self-fluent” initially made me think of self-knowledge, being an expert in oneself, but O’Donohue reminds us that a big part of this is self-accommodation, too. Letting yourself change. Letting yourself be.

+LOL FOR FELLOW ELDEST DAUGHTERS: I like your plan, except it sucks.” Ha! I’m more of a peacemaker/peacekeeper and would never actually verbalize this, but the sentiment is not unfamiliar. LOL.

+FORGET YOURSELF: One fantastic reframe a Magpie shared a few years ago: when you are feeling anxious about a social setting, recast the engagement as an opportunity to show up for someone else. You’re not there for yourself; you’re there to make someone else more comfortable, more seen, more supported, more celebrated. I loved (and needed) the prompt to erase my own ego. This quote from Henry Miller comes at the same theme from a different tack, but I love the overlap.

+EYEING + BUYING: OK the main thing I am debating is whether I want this fringed scarf or this gorgeous blouse from La Double J…! I love all their rich paisley and foulard patterns this season. Would I get more wear out of the scarf or blouse?

Also from this week’s discoveries: cords in Anthropologie’s wildly popular Colette silhouette! I can’t wait to receive mine. I actually ordered in navy since I already have several pairs of brown cords. How cute?! The pockets?! Love that these come in a petite inseam!

In a different vein, I heard Kylie Jenner’s makeup artist uses this “underpainting” palette for contouring and highlighting and…while I’m not dextrous at this kind of application, color me intrigued. I have grown to like using a contour stick beneath my cheek bones and along hairlines and then blending to give a little definition, so I want to give this palette a try.

And: Barbour launched a really cool collaboration with Tuckernuck — fun updates, twists, and liners on their standard shapes. Don’t you love the floral pattern on the cuffs on this coat?!

Finally: LR just launched a fun, retro-feeling “sport” line. These aren’t really meant for sports, but they’re great “fashion” sneakers for pairing with jeans. I love the detail and thought that went into their design; apparently the founder took months refining them. The backs say “L” and “R” — left and right, but also Loeffler Randall, and even the shoelace cords have fun slogans on them! I loved the founder’s thoughtful behind the scenes post on this!

+FALL VIEWING: I polled Magpies to see what they were watching this autumn, and about 99.9% of us are watching You’ve Got Mail and “Gilmore Girls,” with a smattering tuning in to see “Practical Magic.” Landon and I love to watch “Scream” and the other 90s horror classics around this time of year — is anyone else a horror fan? — but I was delighted that one plucky Magpie stood out from the crowd and said, “I watch ‘Outlander.’ Something about all that tartan.” LOL. I’m sure Jamie Fraser has NOTHING to do with it — per this meme: “I volunteer.” (Landon sometimes calls me “sassenach” and it sends the best thrill down my spine…)
