Jen’s Weekend Drafts: Central Park Poetry.

By: Jen Shoop

+CENTRAL PARK BENCH PLATE POETRY: Gosh, how gorgeous is this account that captures some of the poetic bench dedication plaques in Central Park?! I’m in love with this one, and the comment beneath it: “Some of these plaques could be entire movies.” Amen.

+THE CYCLOPS OF CENTRAL PARK: Speaking of Central Park poetry, I read this book to my daughter’s third grade class this week and was reminded of how charming it is. It’s about balancing adventure with comfort, and the illustrations and writing are delightful. My daughter loves it because we lived on Central Park West right by Gapstow Bridge, which is mentioned by name in the book. Great book to add to your children’s library. (It’s been a minute since I updated this post, but more of our favorite picture books here and here. What are yours? Any additions?)

+A DREAM DRESSING ROOM / CLOSET: Well, now we know what heaven looks like. Eeek! I’d never leave this room.

+FOR A LAUGH: Three things that made me LOL this week: POV: You’re having a sleepover with your best friend in 2008 (excuse the language but OMG, I cackled! The strange things you do with your best girlfriends when you’re a teen…!); a really annoying part of modern technology; and Gwyneth Paltrow being robbed (“our unbothered queen” — lol).

+FOXGLOVE BOUQUETS: I absolutely love foxgloves (in fact, have a piece in my book, Small Wonders, about this flower and the way it stirs my imagination), and was swooning over this bouquet from DC-area florist Repot Floral. This is a bouquet I would cherish.

+THE MIRACLE OF THE NORMAL: This quote by Alain de Botton rings deeply true. After you’ve been “in it,” the smallest normalcy is a rescue.

+SEINFELD FASHION: Landon and I have been re-watching Seinfeld from the first episode and — my God, what comedic geniuses! — but also, why does Jerry look so chic all of the sudden?! I swear his uniform of light-wash denim and heavy-weight tees with a slight mockneck and drop shoulder could be sold at AYR. Tell me these jeans aren’t Jerry coded?! I know normcore has been a thing for the last five years or so, but his looks are SERVING! I would absolutely wear the outfit below — early mornings tee, jeans, sneakers, leather jacket. Walkman optional.

PS – New AYR denim silhouette alert! Cropped!

+EYEING + BUYING: The main thing I’m excited about purchasing this week: a pair of these viral Donni taffeta pants! I cannot wait for them to arrive in the mail. Sidebar: what do we think about those sheer socks they’re styling them with?!

Other items on my radar:

+This gorgeous floral shirtdress I ordered, keeping it in mind for some of my book events. (Two confirmed: Bethesda on April 14th and Charleston, SC on April 16! Mark your calendars; details to come!)

+Earrings that are similar to my Dorseys but have a little more hardware — under $150.

+You all have been loving this Paris cardigan jacket! On sale for $75. I have in a past-season blue and she’s perfect over a white tee with jeans.

+AYR’s new cropped jeans silhouette!

+The designer shoes I’m eyeing for spring.

+New home finds: the chicest matcha set; ruffle-edge flower pots; pretty floral acrylic coasters; a fab bedside table at a great price; the teapot I’m eyeing.

+OMG. This puffer for a little one. Under $40!

+PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON AND MAGPIES: Did anyone else catch Paul Thomas Anderson’s magpie motif in his acceptance speech at the Golden Globes last Sunday?! Several of you messaged me about it! Landon and I were also dying when he used the word (multiple times, including as a verb!), but he expressed his central theme here: “Writers, we’re magpies, we steal all the bits and pieces that everybody says, as best we can.” Yes, writers are collectors! Curators! They chase what makes them lean forward; they draw shiny words and interesting characters to themselves, back to the nest, to tinker with. Anyway: it’s 2026; PTA used the word “magpie” as a verb; it’s our year and anything is possible.
