Free Spirit

By: Jen Shoop

My personal style is pretty much as far away from the “hippie earth mama” vibe as you can get, but I must admit a recent gravitation towards some more free-spirited, unbuttoned looks.  Specifically, as mentioned yesterday, I’ve been in the mega-covet territory when it comes to fringe necklaces, like this BCBG style ($88, BCBG) —

It’s just begging to be worn with a loose voile top ($225, YouHeShe), some black skinnies, and some statement sandals ($75, Seychelles):

I’d add some simple gold studs ($35, Gorjana) and this Missoni-esque tote ($29, Zara) and call it a day:

Alternately — now, correct me if I’m entering fashion no-no land — a loose white top ($99, Calypso) and some J. Brand shorts in flame red ($159, Shopbop) are just the sort of low-key, Southwest-chic vibe I’ve been digging lately:

Pretty cool-looking with a long lariat necklace ($195, Jenny Bird) and some eye-catching sandals (Paloma Barcelo, $195, Net-A-Porter):

An arm-full of mix-and-matched bracelets and bangles finishes the look — I’m thinking an oversize-faced leather-band watch (a Rachel Zoe pick! — $60, PiperLime) — love the rose gold accent metal, and would offset with a set of rose gold bangles ($345, Dannijo):

…and a mix of these awesome silk-thread box-chain bracelets (first discovered at Shopbop, but available in additional colors at the Poupette NYC e-boutique for $49/pop…UM, I’m obsessed and want to get one for each of my sisters!):

For the full boho-Southwestern Coachella chic-pea vibe, go the extra mile (yard?) in this full-volume white maxi (Milly, $525, Shopbop):

I might finish with House of Harlow starburst studs ($39, ShoptheTrend), this perfect-match Matthew Williamson fringe clutch ($1,650, Matthew Williamson), and some gold-accented sandals (love these puppies — $56, TopShop):

Alternately, SunoNY has been the It label for flower power minded fashionistas since Kate Bosworth showed up at Coachella in one of their designs two years ago — consider testing the look yourself in this little dress (conveniently on sale for $396, Suno):

Keep the add-ons unfussy and neutral — cream t-straps ($16, Forever21) and a mini Chloe bag ($620):

Or go for a more literal version of the Kate Bos look —

— by wearing  some black aviatahs ($189, Ray-Ban) and this tie-dye print Gryphon dress ($320, LesNouvelles):

Finish with some lace-up sandals {I’ll admit to a reluctance when it comes to these…but Kate Bos rocked ’em, and so does my favorite mini chic pea, Kourtney Kardashian — $185, Piperlime} and a tasseled, oversized clutch ($442, Ten Over Six):

BTW — any of the above looks would look per.fect. with some bold shades (love this retro-cool plasticon style — $235, Ten Over Six):

Love the idea of wearing a pair of the above with a simple white silk-accented tank ($95, Reiss), a bold beaded necklace ($9.80, Forever 21) and some white shorts (J. Brand, $143, Pink Mascara) —

— and then finished with a bold yellow bag (MUST HAVE — $109, Zara) and some dramatic Chloe sandals (on sale for $322, Net-A-Porter):

This tasseled topper ($135, Jen’s Pirate Booty) also caught my eye —

It’d be awesome over a bikini ($85 for top, $85 for bottom — Calypso):

— but would also pair well with shorts or skinnies, some sandals (I like this faux lizard style — $58, A/X) and this tote ($310, Reiss):

Love.  So much that I’m gonna have to order this Adia Kibur necklace ($58), which has been in my Shopbop “Loves” category under my account for the past week and a half.  Mine.  Woo, free spirit!
