Pep(lum) It Up

By: Jen Shoop

Was anyone else terrified when peplum came into vogue?  (“You want volume…where?  In the mid-section?  Right by my thighs?  Que pasa?  Are you insane?”)  But then…this:

So.  It was time to reconsider.  That, and the fact that my hip little sis was wearing a peplum top when I visited her in NYC, so that pretty much sealed the deal.  So, I snagged this inexpensive boucle top from TopShop ($50) — I liked the color and texture.  A little different.  I’ll wear it with a deco-style pendant ($168), my black J. Brands ($185) and booties (um, these Zanottis are…sick — $995.  Side note: did anyone see Ramona Singer shopping at G. Zanotti’s flagship store in NYC on RHONY earlier this season?  She botched the name so badly I almost went deaf.):

I like it with an oversized clutch ($62):

Or — how about peplum on the bottom, in the form of this dreamy Lanvin skirt (I mean…perfection — $2K — but get the look for far less with this TopShop style, $68), paired with a patterned blouse ($27 — Kirna Zabete for Target) and some big earrings (LOVE me some Suzanna Dai — $145)

Finish with a classic pair of pointed pumps ($206) for a seriously glam daytime look…and of course the Givenchy Antigona bag wouldn’t hurt (dreamy. – $2,500):

For something on the more casual end, consider this striped peplum top ($58) with a tangly pearl-and-chain necklace ($150), dark wash skinnies and Chanel-esque flats ($69):

I dream about wearing the latest + greatest from Alexander Wang (though I’m still loving my Emile, which I drooled over for a full year and have enjoyed every minute of owning — $985):

While this isn’t peplum, how much do we love this mustard capelet from Alice and Olivia ($495)?!

Perfect over this peplum top ($37) with jeans and some chic booties (love this cap-toed pair from B Brian Atwood! — $475):

I’d finish with this TDF snakeskin cross-body ($795).  I saw it in person at the J. Crew Collection Store in Manhattan, and was uber envious.

If this is all too much, just test it out with a cozy topper from Tibi ($495) and your favorite pair of work skinnies ($89) and pointed flats ($188) for some high-gloss sophistication:

Finish with a smart cross-body, like the Mulberry Effie ($670).  Can’t decide if I like it better in the white or black…

Who’s willing to try the trend?!

  1. I have the Effie CB in white. I went white because I have a primarily black wardrobe, while I have a lot of black bags I didn’t want to do black on black all the time. The white adds a sophisticated pop (I know you’re a fan of b&w) but it practical because it matches with almost any color in a wardrobe.
