DENIM PLAYSUIT // BLACK WIDE LEGS // DARK WASH WIDE LEGS // BARN JACKET // LIGHT WASH WIDE LEGS // COLORED DENIM

Beginning to hunt for fall denim — these chocolate brown beauties are so good. They’re less of a barrel fit, but Gap has a really chic pair in chocolate brown, too — I think I’ll order these in the petite length. I have really good luck with Gap denim. The fit and quality are always incredible, especially given the reasonable price.

Other favorite finds so far this season: this wide leg is classic — or maybe opt for this tan. LOVE this Madewell barrel jean (and so do you Magpies – these were a bestseller this past week) and this dark wash crop.

As I mentioned last week, I think the barrel / gaucho styles will remain relevant this season, as will wide legs — so hang onto those or contemplate an investment. These AYRs, these La Lignes, and these Pistolas nail a just-enough-of-the-barrel-trend balance. These Agolde Dames or any of Veronica Beard’s Taylor styles are very trendy for wide legs. The cuffed wide leg style was super in last year; I’d go with these for the year ahead.

If you like the wide-leg look but think you’ll drown in them, consider Agolde’s Ren — a wide-ish leg but a sleek, high-rise silhouette that shows some ankle. Vibe for less with this Gap pair.

For a transitional pop of color: this brick red is divine, or try them in the dark wash drop hem style.

Most of my friends (like, at least half) swear by Mother jeans. They release silhouettes that just work and fit great — plus, they have a dedicated petites section. I find a lot of their styles are airplane-comfortable. Their Hustlers are specifically a fantastic, slimming fit for tucking into boots. I really want to try this style (modified barrel / gaucho / etc), but it keeps selling out.

If you’re into a statement jean, I’ve been seeing the Ulla J. Olympias all over Instagram! On sale in a cool marigold color that could be good for fall. Imagine with a navy blazer.)

On the dress front: I recently shared a bunch of my favorite denim dresses, but with an eye toward transitioning pieces into fall, I’d consider this and this. So good with a leather sandal or a tall boot as it gets colder. And I’m still obsessing over VB’s denim waistcoat (so good with white jeans!) — look for less with this.

Finally, denim jackets! I’m drooling over this Loewe. I did find this Nili Lotan with a similar contrasting cord collar but it doesn’t have that swingy shape to its body — a bit more tailored — and I still think this boxy Gap steal would be a good way to scratch the itch. Or how about this La Ligne chore jacket?! If those are too boxy / boyish for you, you might consider this tailored denim jacket from JCrew Factory!

P.S. How I style the netted flats trend.

P.P.S. Back to school buys for kids.

P.P.P.S. The very busy spider.

  1. That Loewe jacket — wow!! Such a unique piece. Love the shape in the back — I didn’t know denim could drape that way! Please report back if you find a more budget-friendly alternative!

Are kick fits/demi-boot jeans still “in” this season? I love wide leg jeans, but I find that being petite I have to be more thoughtful about what I wear them with, esp. the proportions of the top, the right shoes, etc. Whereas kick fits are still more throw-on-and-go for me, and I still enjoy them!

    1. Hi Mia! This is so tricky — I personally feel like the kick fit silhouette is on the wane BUT I am also a huge proponent of wearing what works for you / your body. I can’t tell you how many pairs of jeans I’ve bought that end up languishing in the closet because they’re difficult to style, can only be worn with certain shoes, etc. I find I go back to my “classic fit” Agolde Rileys and Citizens Charlottes A LOT because they just work.

I know that’s not very helpful, but that’s my honest reaction!

  2. I am an admitted denim-head and I love sifting through inspiration for the upcoming season! Your post reminds me that my favorite pants I acquired for fall 2023 were a pair of chocolate-brown five-pocket barrel legs from Roucha. Can’t wait to pull them iut again! Roucha is a STELLAR source for barrel fits and really any silhouette that’s just a little bit directional. They were founded by Jill Wenger, who also founded Totokaelo (RIP). Just thought I’d plug!

Also – I am still loving AGOLDE’s 90s Crop fit, which is perfectly straight leg (not really slim at all, at least on me) – I have them in 4 washes, 2 blue, 1 white, 1 black. So bought in, but I love them and they’re great as a stable base for other silhouettes without looking dated.

    xx

    1. Had never heard of Roucha but opened a tab and LOVE the look of their fits. How do you find the sizing runs?

I’m obsessed with the Madewell darted barrel leg jean, ordered a pair about a month ago, tried them on at home and found I needed it them a tall length + smaller size, and naturally, they’ve been fully sold out since. These Roucha ones may be my consolation prize, thank you!

      1. Ahh yes, the sizing at Roucha is idiosyncratic! It goes on a letter scale, where a double letter represents the equivalent of a petite inseam. I generally have found it fairly true to size but erring on the side of generosity. For context, I am 5’4” but with somewhat short legs for my height, and I typically wear an 8 on the bottom (sometimes 6, and more rarely a 10). My size in Roucha is BB and it has been pretty perfect! Also worth noting that a lot of their fits include details that can help you adjust the garment to your specific size – e.g. interior drawstrings or two waist buttons (giving you the choice of a tighter or looser fit).

        Hope that helps!

        1. SO helpful, thank you. Naturally, the two style + wash pairings I like are sold out, but I signed up for restock notifications. Appreciate the tips!
