Mary Poplin.

Striped poplin statement pieces have been all over the place, and I, for one, am not yet tiring of the look.  (You may have suspected it after spying the poplin stripe detailing on this sweatshirt from my loungewear trend round-up or this stunning shirtdress from my Sunday Best picks.)  It’s the East Coast girl in me mixed with the nerdy student in me: all I want is a crisp, autumn-friendly stripe in an unusual cut or with an exaggerated sleeve.  These women are nailing the vibe I’m after: classic, but with a twist.

My top picks:

+Literally, a classic with a twist ($65).  (Or this similar style.)

+V. bold, even for me — and I like it (on sale for $205).  Imagine with black pointed toe pumps and a Chanel.  Molto bene.

+Balloon sleeves FTW ($84).  This is the kind of fashion-forward-within-limits article of clothing you could use to test a trend in a safe way.  Just pair with a pencil skirt at work and feel like the chic-est lady on the planet, or simple skinny jeans for a girls’ night out.

+Very into the embroidered detailing on this Tanya Taylor dress ($550).  (And if you like the style of that dress, Shopbop has the same cut in a different pattern on sale here!)

+Stepping away from the blue and white classics, consider this red funnel-neck blouse ($68), which looks a lot like the shirt the chic pea is wearing in the last street style snap above.

+This Johanna Ortiz piece leaves me weak in the knees, in part because of the hefty price tag ($1000 AHHH).

+This dress does all the work for you ($295).  Easy style.
