I had a lot of positive reactions to my post last week on work hacks and also on my previous posts on my new business — thank y’all for the love. Maybe I’ll start sharing a little bit more about professional Magpie in the future.
But this weekend, I was a lazy bone.
I tried to power through Gilead — beautiful but oh-so-slow. I’m anxious to get through it, though, because next up for my book club is The God of Small Things, which is one of my top five favorite books, and I haven’t read it in probably a decade. I toted it around in my bag all weekend — to the dog park, to the nail salon — but didn’t make much headway. That’s how I know it’s a tough book — I can usually power through anything quickly, even if I’m not a huge fan, but this is just dense and thought-provoking enough (and it moves verrrry slowly — the monologue of a dying man to his son) that I just cain’t. Anytooters, here’s how I spent a lot of the weekend: putzing around the house playing with my pup Tilden, cooking dishes from Chrissy Tiegen’s cookbook (especially loved her cauliflower mash, which has RICOTTA in it, which is pretty much manna from the heavens…one of my favorite foods), eating too much ramen at Wasabi (my fav ramen spot in Chicago — don’t let its generic, American-ized name and exhaustive menu fool you: this place has legit ramen with broth cooked for like 45 hours), and staying up one night too late watching Forces of Nature (why, why, why? terrible movie).
Basically, I was a sloth this weekend, and I don’t feel bad about it. On Saturday morning, Mr. Magpie and I lounged around, chatting over coffee for like 3 hours. Sometimes you have to recharge the batteries and do a lot of nothing.
Also, does it mean that I’m officially middle-aged that I voluntarily picked Basic 4 for breakfast at the grocery? I mean, hello, who am I? Next thing I know, I’ll be buying plan bran flakes and prune juice. (But actually, Basic 4 is real good.)
So you may not be surprised to find that this post is kinda reflective of the mellow mood we were in this weekend: I’m not usually an athleisure kinda chickadee, but all I wanted this weekend was my yoga pantalones and my favorite old t-shirts. For those of you in a similar mindset, some inspiration that loungewear can look cool:
+I snagged a few of these throwback Calvin Klein bralettes ($28) and they are SO comfortable and just weirdly make me happy. Like my little 90s girl secret.
+In a similar vein, Adidas is having a moment, and this sweatshirt feels fresh ($60). All of these #basic, sporty, normcore brands are coming back in a major way, largely thanks to the Kardashians — very much their look right now.
+I’m a huge fan of Lululemon’s running gear — including their shorts. I haven’t worn these ($98) yet, but love the print. If it’s #basic to wear Lululemon, I don’t care. They make good stuff.
+A wool hat like this (Rag + Bone, $150) would elevate any lounge look to street-style ready, and you can get the look for less with one of these — though I just snagged a classic Nike swoosh hat in black for $20 and plan on wearing it every time I work out.
+But, I had to snag this kids’ size Adidas sweatshirt ($36) — the pattern in rad, and I’d seen one of my fav lifestyle bloggers, Naomi of LoveTaza, wearing it here, and thought she’d looked adorable.
+I’m not huge into slogan tees, but this winky face ($38) is pretty cute.
+Speaking of sweatshirts, I’ve heard people rave about the brand Outdoor Voices, now carried by J. Crew — this hoodie of theirs is slim-fitting and comfy-looking ($85).
+These joggers look insanely comfortable ($78), though I have to say, I am a longtime devotee of the buttery-soft, floaty dreamy pants from J. Crew ($55).
+Finally, Nike has never, ever gone OUT. Adidas and Puma felt dingy for awhile (sorry, no offense), but Nike has always felt fresh to me. I love straightforward, classic tees like this one ($35) and I still stand by my many earlier comments that Nike’s gear just LASTS. I’ve had a pair of their leggings (used heavily!) that have lasted 10 years. (To that end, these look sporty and fresh. I need them.)
+If we’re going a little beyond straight-up athletic wear, this sweatshirt dress ($29) looks so comf and would look adorable with some dressed-up sneaks (these Kenzos are on sale for $114).
+This white tee dress ($76) could be styled in a million ways, including with some textured slip-on sneaks (Joie, $190).
+Wool ball caps ($19) are chic.
+Oversized Vince sweater (on sale for $292) with moto-effect leggings ($110) and Golden Goose sneaks (I’m pretty sure I’ll never be cool enough to wear these, but they are HOT ra now. $515.)
