Fall Haircare.

By: Jen Shoop

I have been loving a little reset in the haircare department this fall — something about the change in weather is a signal to switch up the routine and products. My hair runs on the dry side so I have been fully leaning into hydration.

The Leave In Conditioner by Crown Affair has been a gamechanger — I use on the bottom half of my hair and it locks in hydration without weighing down my hair / feeling greasy. It is unlike any product I have ever tried, truly. A few other products I truly believe in for hair health and shine: Necessaire Rosemary Serum (I apply in the morning before working out 1-2x a week, let sit while I’m exercising, and then wash out in the shower), this “Miraculous Oil” for shine (I apply a tiny bit to wet hair), and L’Ange’s glass hair. I really like the L’Ange formula because it mists on very lightly (has a good applicator), smells wonderful, and does not weigh down hair. The weighing down factor is critical for me because I have very fine, straight hair that prefers to be boring.

I mentioned recently that I got this volumizing mousse on the rec of Julia Berolzheimer and have had both encouraging and disastrous results — LOL. The first time, I put way, way too much in and my hair was crispy and greasy. I had to wash it all out! The second time, I used a more judicious amount and mainly applied at the crown of my head and it really helped. However, I think the most effective way for me to get a little lift along my hairline is by rolling up the front section of my hair in one of these large velcro rollers and pinning it in place with one of these clips while I’m applying my makeup. I picked this up from several Glamsquad stylists, who tended to do this and it really helps my fine hair achieve a little lift around the face! I spritz with this lightweight, non-aerosol hair spray, and that helps, too.

Then there are a few items that I’ve loved forever and use year-round: this magical vented brush (a Magpie reader favorite for years and years — one of your top upvoted “regrettably worth it” items; I’ve now converted multiple sisters and friends), Crown Affair’s hair towel (really reduces dry time, and has such a clever design with the little elastic in the back to tuck and secure the towel ends into), and this incredibly moisturizing shampoo and conditioner duo.

These and a few other great haircare products below:

Of course I have to include the AirWrap — will not stop rhapsodizing about this tool! Simply the best. Has completely changed how I feel about my hair. I can get pretty close to a professional blowout at home myself.

P.S. The “I’m heading upstate” starter pack.

P.P.S. Fall jewelry finds.

P.P.P.S. Am I rushing the season?
