Bring in the New

By: Jen Shoop

HAPPY 2013!  The New Year brings with it the opportunity for reinvention, and I’ve been drawing a ton of inspiration from the street style looks captured by The Sartorialist, Stockholm Street Style, Tommy Ton, and more.  I feel like the vibe on the streets tends to center upon an urbane mix of the loose/undone (baggy sweaters, boyfriend jeans, slouchy knits) and the razor-edge/pin-thin (straight hair, sharp edges, structured bags).  The color palette is fresh if not basic: navy, red, camel, black.  I know I’m throwing a lot of generalities around here, but that’s the aesthetic that’s cropping up on my radar, and I’m cozying right on up to it.

LOVE.  (Except for that last pic — the way her leg is angled makes me feel uncomf.  Anyone else?)  Here are some pieces that I’m strongly considering in homage: first, a nubby knit sweater ($495) with skinnies and those colorblocked Aquazzura booties I fell in love with earlier this season (now on sale for $425) and maybe a cool-girl knit hat ($39):

The Alexander Wang Duffel ($895) would be dreamy here:

Or, how about this optical white Stella McCartney topper (on sale for $698 — what a slick investment piece!) with a crystal-encrusted collar necklace ($470):

Finish with this colorblocked tootsies (so chic! — $110) and…O.M.G., bargain of the month, this Jerome Dreyfuss wonder (on sale for $722):

Slam.dunk.  Also hot on my list?  This cuffed-sleeved trench (Whit, on sale for $358):

I’d wear it over a slim-fit striped tee/sweater (Comme des Garcons, $150) and uber-skinny jeans, capped off with some great neutral booties (on sale for $95):

Then, finish with the Wang Pelican ($925)

Bam.  Finally, one last look inspired by the snapski of Christine Centenera (the Vogue editor in the asymmetrical skirt above): a colorblocked sweater (on sale for $158) with either a leather skirt (I snagged this style for $149 earlier this year — please disregard the horrendous styling on the Club Monaco site…it’s truly terrifying.  The skirt itself in person is beyond adorable) or coated skinnies ($218) and some mid-calf, wedge booties (Givenchy, on sale for $722):

{A pair of Isabel Marant booties would be even more “Street” for the totally fashion-fearless.}  Finish with a simple cross-body ($298):
