It’s fall. It’s time to get serious about all things tweed, herringbone, and houndstooth — time to take a note from Godfather Ralphie (practically family in my Magpie nest — Mr. Magpie’s closet is about 99.9% stock with Ralph Lauren separates. As I’ve mentioned previously, Mr. Magpie is the type of guy who wears a bow tie to bars and a polo shirt to bed).
I’m liking the idea of these houndstooth wool pants ($138, J. Crew) with a silken Equipment blouse ($208, Shopbop) and a statement necklace featuring heavy gold ($311, Boutique1):
I’d finish with these cap-toe pumps ($89, Zara) and this glossy, be-tasseled black carry-all ($495, Rebecca Minkoff):
And, in terms of accessories, I’d wear a borrowed-from-the-boys watch accented in tortoise ($46, ASOS — or get the name brand version from Michael Kors for $195) and a signet ring ($398, Sarah Chloe):
Dress up your technology in similar borrowed-from-the-boys detailing: consider a classic brown leather iPad case ($109, Lodis) and a textured-effect iPhone case ($40, Jack Spade):
I also love this fair-isle knit sweater dress (Sandro, $190, Place Des Tendances), and would probably wear it in these crisp fall days with a pair of riding boots (Tory Burch, $495, Nordstrom) and a herringbone “hacking jacket” atop it all (love the layering possibilities that cool weather brings…this style is by J. Crew, but they’ve sold out of this lovely heathered green, which is still available, oddly enough, for $200 at Net-A-Porter):
I’d finish with this nubby crossbody ($49, Zara):
Also loving the idea of this FANTASTIC YSL vintage skirt (only one available, and it’s reasonable — $134, Farfetch) paired with a crisp white, demi-sheer blouse ($208, Shopbop) and some eye-catching enorm-studs ($150, Noir):
I’d pair with ladylike pumps (still can’t get over these Givenchy beauties — $590, Net-A-Porter):
Finally, a chunky gold chain bracelet ($162, BaubleBar) —
— and a red/maroon cross-body bag (Marc Jacobs, $725, MyTheresa):
It would all look elegant, classic trench (Burberry is the high fashion standard, but can you believe how closely this Kai-Aakmann style comes to that high mark?! and for 1/4 of the price?! — $260, Satine Boutique):
Or, check out this mod-style shift dress ($189, Isabella Oliver), which would look lovely with a big ol statement necklace (Adam Lippes, on sale for $452, CoutureCandy), and a pair of houndstooth pumps ($118, Vince Camuto):
I like it with the West End Kennedy purse ($345, Kate Spade):
Top it all off with a gray boucle coat (I know — lots of texture here, but it all works together harmoniously — $415, Built By Wendy) and a pair of red leather gloves ($34, Debenhams):
Or, consider a classic blue oxford ($109, Steven Alan) tucked into a camel wool mini ($195, StyleBop) and topped with a BESPOKE blazer from Franklin & Gower (OMG, check it out, you can customize the color of the wool, the color of the lining, and the color of the accents — LOVE — $460, Franklin and Gower):
I’d finish with spectator-inspired tootsies (I featured these last week, and am still contemplating their purchase…Tracy Reese, $139, Endless):
And, finally, a tweeded clutch ($34, Aubin and Wills):
For accents, I suggest simple shiny gold circle studs ($200, Ylang23), a monogrammed necklace ($249, Sarah Chloe), and a chunky gold bracelet ($245, Dannijo):
And, of course, opt to finish the day off Mad Men style with a classic cocktail, poured from one of these awesome vintage decanters ($100 apiece, Chic Shop LA):
Bottoms up.
