6 Years, Baby.

By: Jen Shoop

I cannot believe it, but this August will mark my SIXTH wedding anniversary with Mr. Magpie.  In some ways, I still feel like a newlywed.  In other ways, we’ve lived about five lifetimes with each other since we tied the knot — the graduation from an MBA program, four job transitions, a big move to the Midwest, two godchildren and a total of three nephews/nieces born, innumerable vacations and visitors (highlights: Aspen and San Sebastian), the purchase of our first home, the addition of our sweet puppy Tilden, and the launch of our business.  Wow.  So many happy memories that I can’t even stop to give a moment’s notice to the many hardships, disappointments, and challenges we’ve faced together–though those, too, were in their own way a gift in that we’ve leaned on each other and realized how iron-clad our relationship is.  (Incidentally, this reminds me of a quote I saw the other day on Instagram: “God is not nearly as concerned about your comfort level as you are” and, on the other hand, “God gives you what you can handle.”  Sort of puts things in perspective for me.  Sorry to take this blog post to the land of inspirational religious quotes — usually I cringe when I see the hashtag #blessed, and I certainly don’t want to turn off those of my readers with alternate perspectives on religion — but there it is, and how true and dear those quotes are to me.)

It’s funny because our five-year anniversary somehow felt less momentous than this year’s, and I can’t quite figure out why.  Maybe it’s because we took a wild and terrifying plunge into the world of entrepreneurship together, or because we’ve rounded out our little family to include Tilden, or maybe I’m just feeling extra sappy this year because I am so incredibly proud of my husband, and every single day I get to work next to him, growing our business alongside him, and I’ve learned so much about how incredibly smart, driven, passionate, and fair (my God!  this man is so fair and honest and on-the-straight-and-narrow when it comes to making business decisions, and I love and respect the rigor of his ethics) he is.  You learn a lot about someone when you are operating under tremendous stress and within insane constraints, and he is a rock–cool, confident, laser-focused.

OK, so we’ve established I have a huge crush on my husband.

To celebrate six years, we’re going away for a weekend at the Kohler Resort in Wisconsin.  Here’s what I’m planning on wearing:

+Self-Portrait white maxi (on sale for $529, plus 30% off!) with white tassel earrings ($45 — I own these in navy and love ’em — SO lightweight!) and my Alexandre Birman sandals ($595), all topped off with a splashy clutch ($1,495).

My sister gifted me this adorable bustier dress she designed for Mara Hoffmann (mine is in a fabulous pastel striped fabric) and I’ll pair it with my favorite wear-with-everything Hermes sandals ($680) and a straw clutch ($88) and maybe a pair of Bon Bon earrings ($275).

For the actual anniversary night, I have been pining after this statement making Milly ($595).  Yes, it’s retro.  Yes, it’s taking a note from Lanvin’s book.  And yes, it’s a big departure from the rest of my wardrobe.  But I neeeeed it.  And I want to wear it with these drop earrings from Oscar ($425).

+Perfect pajamas ($99).

+I own these earrings in white, but now they’re available in fetching gold ($65).

+This dress is just so romantic ($330).

+A gauzy white romper seems appropriate ($409).

+The perfect bridal clutch ($650).

+WOW WOW WOW ($428).

+If you got it, flaunt it ($114).

+Statement-making lace-up sandals ($100).
