Bring the Funk.

I mentioned that one of my new year’s resolutions is to take more fashion risks.  Below, three looks that qualify as fashion-forward in my book:

Levi’s 501s.

Really?!  I never thought I’d be drawn to classic, boyfriend cut Levis ($98).  But they’re having a moment (along with all other things early 90s / normcore).

I’m thinking I’d wear mine with this chic Alexander Wang tank (on sale for $130), an epic heel (these Fendis are quite the centerpiece, eh!? — $900), and this perfect Marni tote ($1,590):

P.S. — I think the key to pulling off the Levi boyfriend jeans is to keep the other elements super classic and simple.  Note the way the three chic peas pair them with things like a striped button down ($89) or a white linen tee (Everlane is supposed to make BOMB tees — my sister swears by them!).

Mixed Patterns.

One of my sisters is a savant when it comes to mixing prints in the same look.  It probably helps that she has a degree from Parson’s, specializes in print design, and works for a fashion house best known for its wild prints (Mara Hoffmann).  I struggle with it, though.  I wish I could pull it off like she does — and like these chic peas do:

I’m going to go ahead and try my hand at the look this spring with this Marni-esque off-the-shoulder printed dress (a steal at $69), paired with these stunning (also affordable!) slingback flats ($98), a perforated leather clutch (Clare Vivier, $215), and Sunday Somewhere shades ($270):

Cheeky Bag.

Sometimes I think I play my handbag game a little too safely.  These ladies are here to remind us that a sense of humor is always in style…in this case, literally:

Get the look yourself with one of these epic novelties:

+Anya Hindmarch ($1,295);

+Olympia Le Tan (on sale for $380);

+Fendi ($1,188);

+Clare Vivier ($145);

+Edie Parker ($1,595);

+Karl Lagerfeld ($195);

+Kate Spade ($395);

+Les Petits Jouers ($990);

+Paul + Joe ($225).

(Hint: one way to get the funky look for less is by attaching a bag charm ($38) — or maybe this one ($20) or this one ($40) — or a bag tassel ($48 — also check out this monogrammable style from one of my favorite brands, Cuyana!).  You can also personalize your tote with some bag stickers.  Love the idea of putting my initials on a simple tote like this ($60).
