Mother May-o I?

By: Jen Shoop

HA.  The title of this post is so wretched-ly pun-ny.  Because its all about Cinco de Mayo (get it?), which is just around the corner.

If you know me, you know I’ll take any excuse to throw a themed party / buy a special outfit for an occasion.  Cinco de Mayo is no exception.  Bring on the margaritas, ladeez.

Have I told you that Mr. Magpie used to own and operate a business that sold premium, ready-to-drink cocktails?  This was back in the day before Bethenny’s Skinny Girl Margaritas had come onto the scene (which, I’ll admit, aren’t half bad in a pinch–my sister and I used to occasionally indulge in these when we were feeling lazy and in the mood for watching something horrible like Pretty Little Liars while snacking on all.the.carbs).  This was around 8 years ago, when cocktail culture was just starting to burgeon, and everyone was watching Mad Men and insisting that they’d “always loved to sip on vodka” (a la Roger Sterling, barf) and that “manhattans had always been their thing.”  HA.  At any rate, their signature pre-mixed cocktail was called the Jargarita, and they sold it in Mason Jars, and it was UNBELIEVABLE.  Mr. Magpie would infuse the simple syrup with four kinds of citrus and jalapeno, and it was spicy-sweet in all the right ways.  I begged him for the recipe, so here ya go:

Jargarita recipe

100% blue agave blanco tequila  – 2.0 oz

Quality orange liqueur – 1.0

Lime juice – 1.5

Orange juice – 0.5

Lemon juice – 0.5

Grapefruit juice – 0.5

Hot pepper simple syrup – 1.0 (recipe below)

Combine all ingredients in a shaker filled with ice and shake. Strain into a cocktail glass filled with crushed ice and garnished with a lime wheel. If you need to temper the heat or if the drink is too tart, add some good quality honey. Makes 1 generous serving.

Note: Juices should be fresh squeezed.

Hot pepper simple syrup recipe

2 c sugar

1 c water

1 Jalapeno, seeded and thickly sliced

1 Habanero, seeded and thickly sliced

1 Poblano, seeded and thickly sliced

Combine all ingredients in a small sauce pan. Heat over medium heat, stirring frequently until sugar is completely dissolved. Let peppers steep for 10 minutes. Strain into clean container.

Note: taste your peppers beforehand – heat can vary. If the syrup is too hot, you can dilute with regular simple syrup. If you are heat sensitive, decrease the amount of peppers.

{Editor’s note: Serve with a big portion of guacamole and a trough of chips, please and thank you.}

+This Milly dress ($395) may be even a little too over the top…but HEY, I’m reminded of one of my favorite quotes:

“A little bad taste is like a nice splash of paprika. We all need a splash of bad taste—it’s hearty, it’s healthy, it’s physical. I think we could use more of it. No taste is what I’m against.”–Diana Vreeland

+This ruffled, OTS dress ($89).  Also amazing for a fourth of July shindig.  But you could really do Cinco de Mayo right in this lovely little number if paired with some loud earrings–I just snagged these funky ones from BaubleBar for $34!

+Can’t begin to tell you how much I adore this OTS printed dress ($250) — so unique!  You’d be the talk of the town.

+This rose print top ($59) reminds me of Frida Kahlo for some reason…perfection with white denim.

+Colorful, flattering, and hella cool ($228).

+Ulla nails it again.  Love the back.  So hippie-boho-chic.

+Also printed, and also hippie-boho-chic: this $202 Misa lovely.

+A chic embroidered dress ($105) in unexpectedly prim navy.

+Easy breezy ($105).

+Love literally every single dress by Mi Golondrina (all hand-embroidered it Mexico!)

+Baby, you’re a firework ($43).  Wear with big earrings, jeans, and bare feet.  It’s evenly tied with this Anthro top ($155) for the coolest Cinco de Mayo tops out there.

+This embroidered top from Zara ($39) is also the stuff of dreams.

P.S.  — Don’t forget the party favors!  I am DYING over these mini day-of-the-dead pinatas I found on Etsy, though these classic ones are also adorbs.

P.P.S. — I think I need to snag this Frida baby book for #mini for the occasion.
