HA. The title of this post is so wretched-ly pun-ny. Because its all about Cinco de Mayo (get it?), which is just around the corner.
If you know me, you know I’ll take any excuse to throw a themed party / buy a special outfit for an occasion. Cinco de Mayo is no exception. Bring on the margaritas, ladeez.
Have I told you that Mr. Magpie used to own and operate a business that sold premium, ready-to-drink cocktails? This was back in the day before Bethenny’s Skinny Girl Margaritas had come onto the scene (which, I’ll admit, aren’t half bad in a pinch–my sister and I used to occasionally indulge in these when we were feeling lazy and in the mood for watching something horrible like Pretty Little Liars while snacking on all.the.carbs). This was around 8 years ago, when cocktail culture was just starting to burgeon, and everyone was watching Mad Men and insisting that they’d “always loved to sip on vodka” (a la Roger Sterling, barf) and that “manhattans had always been their thing.” HA. At any rate, their signature pre-mixed cocktail was called the Jargarita, and they sold it in Mason Jars, and it was UNBELIEVABLE. Mr. Magpie would infuse the simple syrup with four kinds of citrus and jalapeno, and it was spicy-sweet in all the right ways. I begged him for the recipe, so here ya go:
Jargarita recipe
100% blue agave blanco tequila – 2.0 oz
Quality orange liqueur – 1.0
Lime juice – 1.5
Orange juice – 0.5
Lemon juice – 0.5
Grapefruit juice – 0.5
Hot pepper simple syrup – 1.0 (recipe below)
Combine all ingredients in a shaker filled with ice and shake. Strain into a cocktail glass filled with crushed ice and garnished with a lime wheel. If you need to temper the heat or if the drink is too tart, add some good quality honey. Makes 1 generous serving.
Note: Juices should be fresh squeezed.
Hot pepper simple syrup recipe
2 c sugar
1 c water
1 Jalapeno, seeded and thickly sliced
1 Habanero, seeded and thickly sliced
1 Poblano, seeded and thickly sliced
Combine all ingredients in a small sauce pan. Heat over medium heat, stirring frequently until sugar is completely dissolved. Let peppers steep for 10 minutes. Strain into clean container.
Note: taste your peppers beforehand – heat can vary. If the syrup is too hot, you can dilute with regular simple syrup. If you are heat sensitive, decrease the amount of peppers.
